What dental insurance covers
Do you know what dental insurance covers? Do you even have it? If not, then these are questions that you should be asking yourself as soon as possible.
Dental insurance is a type of health care plan that reimburses some or most of the costs associated with dental procedures and treatments. They can include anything from annual check-ups and cleanings to fillings and root canals to braces and dentures. These plans cover routine preventative measures and emergency surgeries for problems such as broken teeth and infections.
People often mistakenly think that their general medical health insurance covers any necessary dental work they may need. Unfortunately, this isn’t true – but if your health insurer does cover certain types of dental care, it’s because they purchased that type of plan from the same insurer you have.
Most people are unaware of what types of dental work their insurance covers. If you want to know whether or not your insurance covers fillings, braces, crowns, or dentures, call them up and ask – but keep in mind that even if they do cover these procedures, you might still be responsible for a percentage of the costs – not just the basic out-of-pocket fees. If your teeth are causing tooth pain or bleeding gums because the filling came loose, then perhaps an emergency appointment should be made to get seen before next week’s scheduled visit.
Dental insurance is separate from health insurance, but insurance companies offer dental coverage as part of their ‘family benefits.’ This means that the dentist office you visit will accept the terms set out by your health insurer. Just remember that this doesn’t mean that you won’t be asked to pay anything – because even if they do take your plan, it only covers procedures at specific rates and might not cover everything. And just like with any contract, you’re still responsible for any deductible or copayment fees set out by the policy itself.
If dental insurance is something you already have, then maybe now is a good time to start looking into one. Check with your friends who may already have this type of coverage, so see how much your family could potentially save. Whether you have insurance or not, take care of your teeth – they are an essential part of your face and hygiene, after all!
